I knew Elbert as "Tata",Grandfather. He & his wife "Nana" Dona(Ruth) lived across from me in Flagstaff & I don't remember ever not knowing them. They were good people, & the best grandparents (honorary) a kid could have. Elbert was a carpenter, who built the 2 story home they lived in. He was gruff, but loving & he had a great sense of humor - I can still hear him laughing after saying something he thought was funny. He was also a WWII US Army veteran. He was born & raised in Oklahoma, near where I live now and would sometimes tell stories of his life as a child in the country.
Elbert met and married Dona when her son Johnny was a small boy. They moved to Flagstaff, Arizona where Elbert would work as a carpenter at the historic Monte Vista hotel until his retirement. They were active in their community, and sponsored several foreign exchange students.
Elbert and Dona took great delight in their granddaughter Lisa, and helped raise her.
After he retired Elbert enjoyed puttering around his house and yard. He could often be found sitting at the kitchen table, watching the comings and goings of the neighborhood.

*Elbert and Dona(Ruth)didn't share the same birthday as it shows on their markers. I know her birthday was not in September, she told me they picked a day early in their marriage and forever after celebrated their birthdays together. However WWII draft records found online DO give Elbert's birthdate as September 1, 1915.
