1860 census Bloomfield, Lagrange, IN: Martin V. Roe, aged 21, no occupation listed, bp OH; Sarah J. aged 18, bp OH. Note: Living in Lima, Lagrange, IN, are Martin H. Roe, aged 56, master carpenter, bp NY; Mary aged 46, bp NY. I feel fairly comfortable that these are Martin's parents, in that Martin V. is a carpenter in the 1870 census, no doubt, learning the trade from his father.

Martin V. Roe, of Co. H, was enrolled Sep. 18, 1861 in LaGrange by Capt. Bingham as a Private; mustered in Nov. 22, 1861 in Ft. Wayne by Lt. Stansbury at age 22. He was 5' 4.50" tall, light complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. Born Nov. 22, 1837, in Michigan, employed as a farmer, married to Sarah Jane Atkinson, resident of Lima, in LaGrange Co., Indiana. Mustered out after serving three years Nov. 23, 1864 in Chattanooga, Tennessee with rank of Private.

Notes: Brother of David. Fought at Stone River. Detailed in Pioneer Corps Dec. 11, 1862; on detached service with Pioneer Squadron Mar. 15, 1863-Nov. 30, 1863. Sent to Evansville Hospital for chronic diarrhea Dec. 3, 1863, returned to duty Mar. 4, 1864. Mustered out on expiration of term of service.

He filed Invalid Pension Application to receive Pension Certificate #1060883 Jan. 4, 1865. On 1870 Ponca, Dixon Co., Nebraska, census and at Center, Cloud Co., Kansas in 1875. Resided in Butte Co., California, 1876 until his death Apr. 10, 1913 in Paradise. Buried in Paradise Cemetery, Old Pioneer Sec. Sarah filed Widow's Pension Application to receive Widow's Pension Certificate #763151 May 10, 1913.
