On Tuesday, December 9th, Janice Bartlett was killed during a canoing safari while on her honeymoon with her husband Bruce Simpson - both of South Africa. They had been married on November 29th.
The guided tour had stopped due to a herd of elephants between themselves and the return route to their camp some 200 metres away. After waiting for a period, the guide decided to take another path through the reeds. According accounts provided by the family, as they turned around, a hippo in the reeds charged knocking all of them into the water. Mr. Simpson dislocated his shoulder in the encounter, but upon searching for his wife, discovered she had been bitten through the heart and lung. She apparently died instantly.
