Merle was the son of Allen and Katherine Zais Nichols of Concord, Nebraska; brother of Arthur, Rachel, Louise, Dale, Richard, Walter, Helen, Leona, Harold, Archie, and two sisters who died in infancy.
Merle was in the U.S. Navy during W.W. 2. He began writing from the Southwest Pacific where he served on a amphibious landing craft to Alice Jones of Eminence, Ky., sister of his buddy, Walter Lee Jones. Later they met when she visited the pair in San Diego. Merle served
nearly two years as a cook third class; after his discharge from the Navy, he bought a house on Pennswood Ave, Bellflower, Cal. and worked at the Wood's cafe.
Merle married Alice Frances Jones on November 10, 1946 at the Methodist Church in Eminence, Kentucky. They were the parents of Larry Gene, Janice Elaine, and Sandra Kay.
