Joseph Alexander "Alex" Ulrich Jr., 40, of Baltimore, died unexpectedly on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at Johns Hopkins Hospital from injuries sustained as a result of a robbery.
Born Nov. 11, 1971, at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Mary Frances (Bennanzar) Ulrich and Joseph Alexander Ulrich Sr. and stepmother, Rose Marie (Andres) Ulrich.
Alex graduated with honors from Smithsburg High School. While in high school, he was active in theater, photography, drama club, and the marching and jazz bands. Alex played the flute, tuba, keyboard, bass trombone and piano. After graduation, he became a theater assistant. In 1993, his love of theater took him to finish a bachelor of arts degree in communications, where he concentrated in theater at Salisbury State University in Maryland. In college, he was also active in acting, which led him to be a member of the Washington County Playhouse. As a child, Alex was active in Cub Scouts Pack 14 and Boy Scouts Troop 14 in Smithsburg, Md. He was also a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Hagerstown, Md.
He worked as a QMRP for Skills of Central Pennsylvania, and devoted a large portion of his life to helping disadvantaged and disabled youth.
Alex is also survived by his two brothers, Timothy A. Ulrich of Baltimore and James F. Ulrich of Smithsburg; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Martin S. Nocchi as celebrant. Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.
