Mrs. Mabel E. Powell Boles, 87, of Biloxi, MS, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003, in Ocean Springs.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Dovel "Doc" Boles, Sr. She was born October 7, 1916, to Clarence and Beulah Doud Powell in Greenville, AL.

She is survived by her son, Dovel Boles, Jr., and wife, Mary Wallace Boles, of Biloxi; grandson, Dr. Nathan Dovel Boles, and wife, Mandy Bishop Boles, of Mobile; and granddaughter, Jennifer Mary Boles, of Mobile, AL.

Mabel was a native of Greenville, AL, where she learned the value of hard work and caring for family. When she was 12, her father died. Mabel tells the story of going to work for Hank Williams' mother. Hank and his teacher, "Tee-Tot" serenaded Mabel at her home. She met and married Dovel "Doc" Boles, Sr., of Florala, AL. "Doc" and Mabel operated a small service station in Greenville, AL, until WWII. Mabel came to Biloxi with her baby, Dovel, when "Doc" Boles went into service at Keesler Air Force Base.

Mabel had been active in Eastern Star, Ann Grayson Chapter #50; and the Golden Circle Sunday School at First Baptist Church of Biloxi. She was President and organizer of the QRM Club, auxiliary to the Biloxi Amateur Radio Club, which "Doc" Boles helped organize.

Mabel loved children and helped working mothers by caring for several local teachers' children. Her talents with her flowers were enjoyed by all, and she received "Yard of the Month" several times. Mabel loved working with her son and grandchildren in her garden. Family and friends looked forward to her special tasty tomatoes.

Mabel's son, Dovel, retired from Biloxi High School and was able to spend the last year and a half learning to cook, and sharing wonderful times together. She will be sadly missed by family, special friends and neighbors, who she cared for dearly.

Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Biloxi, or the Golden Circle Sunday School at First Baptist Church of Biloxi.

Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2004, at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home, Beauvoir Road, Biloxi, MS. A graveside service and interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Southern Memorial Park, Biloxi, MS.
