Charles Frederick Gerst, 84, of Lafayette, died at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, November 1, 2012, at his residence.

He was born August 6, 1928, in Evansville, to the late Elmer F. and Hazel Culley Gerst.

Charlie served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1953.

He graduated from St. Joseph's College in 1950, and played on the golf team.

On January 31, 1953, Charlie married Sue Pendergraft in Evansville and she survives.

Charles had worked at National Furniture of Evansville as a traveling salesman before starting at Leath Furniture and working there from 1966 until his retirement in 1993. After retirement, he sold carpet and blinds through C&S Carpet and Blinds until 2005.

He loved to play golf with the highlight of his game having a hole in one. He enjoyed getting together with his friends at the American Legion and will always be remembered as a "People Person".

Surviving along with his wife are their four children: Janet Pierpont (husband Bryant) of Denver, CO,

Mike Gerst (wife Rita) of Lafayette, Julie O'Leary (husband Rick) of Carmel, Mary Jane Carlson (husband Bill) of Monee, IL; A brother Robert Gerst (dear friend Cathy Ewing) of Evansville; 11 Grandchildren; Justin and Jena Koning, Angela Gerst, Meghan Perry (husband David), Kelsey and Rick O'Leary, Hannah, Teddy, Marissa, Will and Gabe Carlson; two great-grandchildren; Madyson and Ryker Perry.

He was preceded in death by a grandson Jesse Michael Gerst.

Visitation will be from noon until the service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel with Fr. Jeff Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Meadow View Cemetery. You may offer condolences at www.soller-baker.com.
