Rev W F Pate Succumbs to Heart Attack; Rites Today
Baptist Minister, Teacher at Russell High, Dies at 53
The Rev Walter F Pate, 53, teacher of Latin and English in Russell High school for the last 11 years and a well-known Baptist minister, died yesterday in a private hospital following a heart attack Sunday.
Mr Pate, who lived at 705 Winburn drive, East Point, was a native of Clayton county. He received his early education at Locust Grove institute where he was graduated with honors. Later he received his AB degree at Mercer University and his MA degree from Emory University.
Ordained a Baptist minister November 12, 1911, Mr Pate served pastorates in many Georgia towns before coming to Russell High school. These included Morrow, Warm Springs, Raleigh, Williamson, Center Hill, Zebulon, and the Locust Grove Baptist church in Cobb county. He also taught at the Locust Grove Institute for 11 years.
Surviving are his father, Allen Pate, Montgomery; his wife, the former Miss Nellie Crussell; two daughters, Misses Mary Lucile and Frances Miriam Pate; three sons, Ralph C, Ernest G and Eldred F Pate, and a sister, Miss Agnes Pate, Birmingham.
Services will be conducted at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the First Baptist church in Hapeville. The Rev Z E Barron, the Rev W A Duncan and the Rev S A Cowan will officiate. Burial will be in Crest Lawn cemetery under direction of Awtry & Lowndes.
