Military Rites for William Johnson

The remains of Captain William E. Johnson, who was killed April 10, 1944, will arrive in Olean by Erie Railroad Friday night (June 17, 1949) at seven ten o'clock (DST).

The body will be removed to the Halwig Funeral Home where military funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon (June 18, 1949) at two-thirty o'clock.

The Rev. Arthur Gregson, pastor of the Portville Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.

Captain Johnson was born in Olean January 8, 1921. Prior to his enlistment in the United States Army Air Forces was employed at the Olean Tile Company. He received training in various camps in the United States and was commissioned at Marianna, Fla., in January 1943.

He sailed for overseas duty in September, 1943, and was based in England. He flew mainly missions over France and Germany and was killed April 10, 1944 while serving with the 360th Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, Eighth U.S.A.A.F.

He was a member of Olean Aerie No. 616, Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Surviving are his former wife, Mrs. Ruth Lowe. Olean; one son, Roderick E. Johnson, Olean; his father, William E. Johnson, Buffalo, N.Y.; his mother, Mrs. Everit Robinson, one brother, Robert Johnson and one half sister; Miss Donna Robinson, Olean.

"World War 2" United States Army Air Corps Fighter Pilot, 8th Air Force, Killed in action(France). His remains were found in 1949 and buried at Chestnut Hill, 18 June 1949. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Ruth and a son, Roderick.
