Clifton was a B-26 pilot stationed at the Ninth Air Force in England during World War II. Lieutenant Freeman enlisted March 20, 1942; received his commission Feb. 16, 1943, and flew his plane across to England in June. He was due to be promoted to first lieutenant before his next birthday in June. He had been decorated with the air medal, distinguished flying cross, and three oak leaf clusters. He was shot down during a raid over France during his 50th mission on 29 February 1944.
