1Lt. McHugh served with the 8th Air Force in England during WWII. He flew his final mission on June 16,1944 when his B-17 Bomber came under enemy fire. Lt. McHugh with over half his body burnt, and his plane on fire rejoined his unit to complete his mission. After dropping his bombs he attempted to extinguish the flames from his plane, but was unsuccessful. He ordered his crew to bail out, and with his plane on fire heading towards a small town in France he was able to guide his plane into a field just outside of the French Village. Lt. McHugh sacrificed his own life inorder to save the lives of many, and was awarded the Silver Star Posthumously in 1997 for his bravery.
