Sgt. Harner H. Hildebrand,gunner on a Liberator bomber, previously reported as missing was killed in action on March 18 over Germany, according to a report received by the War Department through the International Red Cross.A telegram received from the Adjutant General by the soldier's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hunter H. Hildebrand, former residents of Waynesboro, and Charlottesville, but now residing at Edgewood, Md., stated that further particulars would be given in a letter.Sgt. Hildebrand, 23, was born at Mechum's River and attended McGuffey, Clark and Lane High Schools. Before entering the service in November, 1942, he was an employee of the Paramounty Theatre, Charlottesville.He received his training in camps at Keesler Field, Biloxi, Miss.; Laredo, Texas; El Paso, Texas; and Topeka, Kan. He sailed for England, last January and was stationed at various times in England and Ireland. Sgt. Hildebrand had made several flights over Germany. The last letter received from him by his parents was dated March 12, and was sent from England.Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister, Miss Florence Louise Hildebrand, now employed at the Edgewood Arsenal Plant; three brothers, Edward H. Hildebrand and Lawrence W. Hildebrand, both in the Army, and Dabney C. Hildebrand, 14, now living at Edgewood, Md. Both Edward and Lawrence are at present stationed in Hawaii, the former in the Signal Corps, and the latter in Anti-Aircraft Artillery.Sgt. Hildebrand's mother is the former Miss Ramonia Harner, daughter to Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Harner, of New Hope.
