Copy: The body of S/Sgt. Walter B Schum, age 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter H Schum of 120 East Fifth Avenue, will arrive in Altoona 5:30 o'clock Monday afternoon for funeral services and reinternment. Sgt. Schum was killed in action in France June 27, 1944.

Friends will be received at the Gilden-Barton funeral home after 7 o'clock Monday evening and funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday afternoon.

Sgt Schum entered the army air force Jan 5, 1943, leaving classes in the Senior High school where he was a member of the senior class. He went overseas to England in December, 1943, and first was reported missing and then as killed in action over France while serving as a gunner aboard a Liberator bomber. He was on his 30th mission at the time he met his death and was anticipating a leave at home.

He was born in Altoona Jan 26, 1924, a son of Walter H and Nettie (Beatty) Schum. Surviving are the parents, one brother and one sister, Charles E and Mrs Madeline Shambaugh of the city. While in the city he attended the Second Avenue Evangelical United Brethren church.



S/Sgt Walter Boyd Schum age 20 reported missing in action over France since June 27, 1944 was killed in action the same day. A gunner on the Liberater bomber was on his 30 mission going to the south of Criel France according to the letter of the war department recieved by his parents his plane was shot down 20 miles north of the objective.

A holder of the air medal with Three Oak Leaves Cluster and the Good Conduct Metal the young man would have qulified for the Distingusished Flying Cross and a furlough after the ill fate mission.

To the Parents of Walter B. Schum killed in Action on June 27, 1944 near Criel France came this week of honors a greatfull Government bestowed upon their son for his heroic faithfullness to the cause of his country.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter H. Schum recieved the Distingusished Flying Cross, Three Oak Leaves Cluster, Air Metal and Purple Heart.
