Donald D. Elgin was the first child of John W. Elgin and Violet V. Roseberry of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was born 21 May, 1921. Donald's paternal grandparents were Edward James Elgin and Bertha Agnes Purnell of Walker, Iowa. His maternal grandparents were Austin A. Roseberry and Susan Emma Bumgardner of Linn County, Iowa.
Donald enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 8 July 1940 at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. His enlistment records show that he had 4 years of high school and was single without dependents.
Donald was married to Nina Jo Brock of Bovina, Texas 3 January, 1943. By March, 1943 he had the rank of Sergeant and was living in Amarillo, Texas.
The following is a transcription of his obituary published in the Amarillo Daily News 19 October 1944.
"The War Department has informed Mrs. Nina Jo Elgin, Bovina, that her husband Lt. Donald D. Elgin, pilot of a P-38 has been killed in action over France. Lieutenant Elgin died September 8.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Elgin, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Lieutenant Elgin was an instructor at Amarillo Army Air Field prior to entering cadet training. He received his primary training at Goodfellow Field, San Angelo, and advance at Moore Field, Mission.
He received his wings and commission at Moore Field, February 8, 1944, and had been in the combat area only a few weeks before his death."
Donald and Nina Elgin had one child, Donald Deane Elgin, born 1 November, 1944, not quite two months after his father's death.
