On December 9, 1944, the B17 registered 43-38362 of the 306th bombardment group of the 8th US Air Force crashed on the heights of Fouchy, hit by the Flak in Germany at 27 000 feet, crew evacuated and jumped over the Black Forest towards Wolfach, Germany, empty plane, continued for 60 km and crashed around 12:40.
Only the pilot, 1st Lt Robert H. BROWN died, his parachute did not open. He rests at the Arlington Cemetery Virginia, USA

1st Lt Robert H Brown served with the 369th Squadron, 306th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force operating from RAF Thurleigh (U.S. Army Air Forces Station 111) On 9 December 1944 the 306th Bomb Group target for the day was Stuttgart, Germany. Lt Brown and his crew were flying B-17G, Serial Number 43-38362, this was Brown’s 20th mission. Over the target their plane was hit by AA Artillery and dropped out of formation under control heading south-southwest toward France when Lt Brown ordered the crew to bail out while he piloted the plane keeping it level while the other 8 crew members escaped by parachute, all being rapidly captured by Nazi troops on the ground.

According to Nazi Report KU-3457 Lt Brown also attempted to bail out of the plane with this report claiming his chute did not open resulting in his death. His remains were discovered near a church in Welschensteinach, Ortenaukreis, Baden-Württemberg, Germany located about 15 miles east of the French boarder, the Rhine River. Lt Brown was the only crew member from this plane KIA this day, all others of his crew became POW.
