The 384th Bomb Group flew B-17s from Grafton Underwood, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom between May 1943 and June 1945. They were engaged in daylight bombing missions over Germany as part of the Allies' efforts to destroy the effectiveness of the Luftwaffe.

Sgt Marion Rogers, ball turret gunner of the B-17 42-5849 “Hell’s Belles II”, took off from station 106 Grafton Underwood, at 1145 on a bombing mission over Nantes. However, it was fired upon by fighters and flak, and its engine caught on fire. Part of the plane landed in Meriais and the rest (wing and engine) landed near Fougeray. The plane, shot down. was only partially evacuated.
