Shot down on 9 October 1942 in B-24D-1-CO Liberator #41-23678 'Big Eagle'/'Bathtub Bessie'. Plane attacked by fighters on assigned target Lille I/A, France. The Liberator received direct hits to engine no. 4 and the bomb bay area before crashing near Lille, France. There were 6 killed in action, 1 evaded and 3 Prisoner of War (POW)s. No Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) for this loss. This was the first B-24 listed as MIA from the 8th Air Force.
