World War II Veteran & Brother of the Alabama Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity Second Lieutenant Walter Kelly, U.S. Army Air Forces, 23, was killed in action while piloting his B-17 (Flying Fortress) when it was shot down over Dunkirk & crashed near Conderque, Belgium. Assigned to the 407th Bomber Squadron, 92nd Bomber Group, Walter was returning his aircraft nicknamed "Flat Top" to the squadron headquarters at Podington Air Base in England following a bombing raid on Dresden, Germany. Based on research to-date by the SigEp Patriots Project (SPP), Brother Kelly was the 88th SigEp Patriot to make the ultimate sacrifice during WWII.

The Repton, AL native was a senior at Auburn University when he enlisted in the Army in FEB 1943. Following less than two weeks of basic training, Walter was sent to what he called "pre-pre-flight training" in Danville, KY. In MAY 1944, after training at a number of bases around the U.S., Brother Kelly was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and earned his pilot's wings. In DEC 1944, he was ordered overseas to England.

Walter is remembered on the Hall of Honor of The Alabama Veterans Memorial Park in Birmingham, AL.
