SSgt. John L. Demmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Demmer of Glen Allen, was killed in an airplane crash Jan. 4, 1945, near Etoges, France. He enlisted in the Air Force at Alton, Ill., Jan. 22, 1942, took his basic training at Jefferson Barracks and trained as an airplane mechanic at Chanute Field for five months. He was an instructor at Lincoln, Neb., for 15 months before going overseas Dec. 1, 1943, to England. For eight months he was flight engineer aboard a C-47 Transport, ferrying troops and supplies to the front.
Sgt. Demmer attended high school at Lutesville and State College. He taught rural schools in Bollinger County for six years.
