B-25 Mitchell bomber crew was assigned to 486th Bomb Squadron, 340th Bomb Group, 12th Air Force. On August 15, 1944, his B-25 failed to Return (FTR) from a mission to Avignon South France. Their plane was reportedly was hit by flak in a wing midway between engine nacelle and fuselage causing it to instantaneously burst into flames and go into a spin, detaching a wing and crashing. All six crew killed in action.
