On April 18, 2017, Bob Stephens received the following info in an e-mail with a request to enter it into the Memorial of James Stubblefield. "Ssgt Stubblefield was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 Bomber with the 331st Bomber Squadron, 94th Bomb Group.

Stubblefield's B-17 was on a bombing mission with 112 other bombers to a German airfield at Merignac France. After completing the mission their aircraft was attacted German Focke-Wulf 190s.

The impact from 20mm shells tore his aircraft in half. Stubblefield was able to bailout, but his parachute malfunctioned and he was killed.

11 B-17s were lost on this mission, 49 were damaged. 11 killed, 21 wounded 110 missing (some of the missing were later determined to be POW's.
