On May 8, 2004, the town of Eyguieres held a commemorative ceremony to dedicate a war memorial for Darrell Stoyke. The following text is an excerpt from a brochure regarding the event:
From the Mayor
On this anniversary of May 8th, 1945, the date the allied forces obtained the surrender of Nazi Germany, the village of Eyguieres would like to remember the young american pilot Darrell Keith Stoyke. He was not born to be a hero yet he gave his life to liberate our country.
More than an act of memory, this is our heritage that we need to preserve for future generations. A heritage of values on which we need to build a patriotism that is open and welcoming in preparing for a future that is both more generous and brotherly.
True to this remembrance, l'Association Rhodanienne pour le Souvenir Aerien has given us their assistance.
From this date onward, the sacrifice of Darrell Keith Stoyke will not be forgotten. Even without knowing him, passers-by will read his name on our war memorial and will keep the memory of this American soldier alive, who died for the liberation of France on the 19th of August, 1944, on the fields of Eyguieres.

Lieutenant Darrell Keith Stoyke came to River Falls from Chetek, studied here in preparation for a business course, 1939-1940, and then went to the University of Minnesota, which he attended from 1940 to 1942. He enlisted in July, 1943, in the Army Air Forces. He became a Fighter Pilot and was sent to the European Theater. On August 19, 1944, he was killed in action in Southern France. He received The Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. Lieutenant Stoyke was the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Stoyke of Sheldon.

Lt. Darrell K. Stoyke '44Ex, Lightning fighter pilot previously reported missing in action August 19 over France, was killed on that date according to word received here recently. Lt. Stoyke is credited with destroying one Nazi plane and another probably. He has been awarded the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. Lt. Stoyke entered the air forces in March, 1943 and went over seas last June.
