This was Army Air Corp's Staff Sergeant Manuel H. Larini of Sonora, he was a Flight Engineer/Gunner on a B-26 Marauder - 497th Bomb Squadron, 344th Bomb Group.
Here is the account of how he gave his life for our country, exactly 69 years ago on D-Day:
"On the morning of June 6, 1944 (D-Day) Sg.t Larini was killed off the coast of Montebourg, France, just minutes before American troops stormed ashore at Utah Beach. His B-26 Marauder was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire as it approached the beach. The eyewitness account of Anthony J. Paulino, tail gunner on another plane, state the following:
Right engine and forward bombay of plane was hit by flak, plane pulled left out of formation, three parachutes immediately left the ship from the rear. There was a fire in the forward bombay. I saw the plane explode approximately three and on half minutes after it left formation. Parachutes would have landed between a small island in the North Sea (probably meant English Channel) and mainland of France. At the time the chutes were descending there was a terrific tracer fire enemy ground opposition. There were no survivors. Sgt. Larini was 21 years old.
