Sgt. Max R. Thompson

Military rites for Staff Sgt. Max R. Thompson, who was killed in France May 27, 1944, will be held at the grave in Mount Hope cemetery at 3 p.m. Thursday, with Wall-Diffenderfer's mortuary in charge.
Service will be conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family requests no flowers.

Sergeant Thompson was born October 11, 1919, in Topeka, and was a graduate of Topeka high school. He attended Washburn university prior to entering service and was a member of Central Park Christian church. For two years he was part of the personnel in the selective service headquarters office in Topeka, before going overseas. He was a tail gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress and was stationed in England with the Eighth Air force. He entered service with the National Guard in October, 1940. After joining the Air force he received his wings at Laredo, Tex., and took additional training at Salt Lake City, Sioux City and Kearney, Neb. He was awarded Oak Leaf clusters, Purple heart, and Air Medal.

Survivors are his mother, Mrs. Barbara M. Thompson of 1641 Central Park; two sisters, Mrs. Norman Cowperthwaite of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Charles M. Williams, Jr. of Topeka, and a brother, John W. Thompson of New York. His father, James D. Thompson, died August 23, 1945.
