World War II Navigator on a B-24 Heavy Bomber and a member of "the Flying Eight Balls", of the 44th Bomb Group 8th Squadron based in Shipdham, Norfolk, England. 1st. Lt. Ede flew 9 missions, the last mission to the Tours, France, Airdrome on Feb. 5, 1944.

The wings of a bombardier and a second lieutenant's commission have been earned by Hubert J. Ede, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Ede, 2827 S. 4th, a recent graduate of Roswell Army Flying School, Roswell, NM. Before entering the service he attended St. Xavier High School and was employed at Fort Knox.

LOUISVILLE TIMES ARTICLE – 08/24/1943
Serving as bombardier-navigator on a heavy bomber, Lt. Pete Ede, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles A. Ede, 2827 S. Fourth, has been transferred from Gowen Field, ID, to Wendover Field, UT. A former student at St. Xavier High School, he won his commission and the wings of a bombardier at Roswell, NM, in January, 1943, and the wings of a navigator at Selman Field, LA, in May, 1943.

Louisville airman missing in the European area is 1st Lt. Hubert J. "Pete" Ede, 22, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles A. Ede, 2827 S. 4th. Navigator with a bomber group which has received two presidential citations, Lieutenant Ede has been missing since a raid over France, February 5, the War Department said. A graduate of St. Xavier High School, he was employed at Fort Knox before entering service in 1942.

CRASH OF LIBERATOR FATAL TO FIRST LT. HUBERT J. EDE
First Lt. Hubert J. "Pete" Ede, 22, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles A. Ede, 2827 S. 4th, was killed when his Liberator bomber crashed near Tours, France, February 5, the War Department announced yesterday. A navigator, he received his wings in May, 1943, at Monroe, LA. He was a carrier-salesman for The Courier Journal for five years and worked at Fort Knox before he enlisted in April, 1942. A St. Xavier High School graduate, he went overseas in October, 1943.

Ede; beloved brother of Mrs. Ed Owens, Mrs. Lannert Craig, Arch & Bill Ede. Lt. Ede will arrive Thursday morning and will be taken to T.A. Blanford-Ratterman Funeral Home, 2815 S. 4th, where services will be conducted at 10:30 Friday. Interment Calvary Cemetery. The Holy Name Church Societies will please assemble at the funeral home Thursday at 3 and 8 p.m. to recite the rosary. The Jefferson County Chapter of the American War Mothers will please assemble at the funeral home Thursday at 2 p.m. for their services.
