An article in the St. Cloud Times in September 1949 state that the body of Sgt. Edward C. Schanhaar was amongst the 25 Minnesotans and 1,184 American service personnel transported to the U.S. aboard the U.S. transport "Carroll Victory." Temporarily interred in France, his remains were finally taken to Melrose, Minnesota, on September 11, 1949. A funeral was held at the St. Boniface Church in Melrose, Minnesota, on September 13, 1949.
