Land for this church was conveyed by Allen and Susannah Baker for a sum of $1 to Flinn Garner, Allen Baker, James Chapman, Thomas Ward and Jesse Manning, the trustees. It was originally part of a land tract called Elizabeth's Fancy. This area was later called Sandyville.
The Methodist Protestant Church split from the Methodist Episcopal Church over issues denying representation of local preachers and laity at church conference. Eli Henkle organized the first class in Carroll County at Providence (now Calvary, Gamber) and the second class at Sandy Mount in December, 1828.
A log meeting house was constructed in 1829. In 1855, there was a split in the church's congregation and one group built the Pleasant Grove Church, a short distance down the road.
A new church, constructed from stone gathered from nearby fields was completed in 1867. The original bell was removed to the newly constructed Sanctuary in 1974 and still rings on special occasions.
Some gravestones in the cemetery predate the church and were most likely removed from the Leister farm, which was just north of the church.
The 685 inscriptions were copied by Kim Slattery. Research was by Ann and George Horvath. CCGS appreciates the review of our extract by Faye Caple Haines and additional information furnished.
