The Church of the Lord's Transfiguration, often called Capuchin Church, is a Baroque building erected along with a monastery between 1683 and 1694 by King John III Sobieski as a votive offering for the victories in the battles of Khotyn and Vienna.
The King's Chapel holds the heart of King John III Sobieski, though his body is buried with his wife at Wawel Cathedral in Kraków.
The main altar has painting showing the Lord's Transfiguration and St. Adalbert by Szymon Czechowicz. On the right there is the altar of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a crowned (gold plated silver) painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
During World War II, the Capuchin monks were involved in the pro-independence effort. The monastery housed a point of distribution and transfer of funds sent from London for the purposes of the Home Army. On the night of of June 26, 1941, the Hitlerites arrested the monks and incarcerated them in the Pawiak prison, from where they were transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp and then to Dachau. The only monks left in the monastery were Fathers Benwenuty Kwiatkowski and Alfons Ciechański, who later served as chaplains of the Warsaw Uprising when the church's basements sheltered about 300 people. Partially destroyed and burned down, the church and monastery were rebuilt from 1945 to 1946.
