Springfield Mennonite Cemetery
Cayo, Belize
The Springfield Mennonite Community is located on a crossroad off the Hummingbird highway that connects Belmopan, the capital of Belize, with the town of Dangriga, on the Caribbean coast. The road leading to the colony is unpaved and bumpy, and difficult to navigate in the rainy season. After passing through Springfield it stops abruptly at the last farm, at the edge of the jungle.
Springfield is a small settlement, founded in response to a land shortage in the Barton Creek area of Belize's Cayo District. In 2018 the Springfield Community had several hundred inhabitants in thirty-five families.
The group does not permit the use of modern technology or electricity. Their houses are small and modest. All transportation is done by horse-drawn wagons, and horsepower drives the local sawmill, which is owned collectively by the people of the community.
The Springfield group is closely related to the Hoover Mennonite Church, based in Scottsville, Kentucky. In Belize, the Hoover Church consists of three communities: Springfield, Upper Barton, and Lower Barton. Members of the Lower Barton community have mostly Old Order roots, whereas members of Springfield and Upper Barton have a mixture of Swiss-German, Dutch-Russian, and Belizean backgrounds.
