BRICK CHURCH PIKE (REMOVED)
Relocation of graves, by professional archaeologists, from their original burial sites in the Edgeville Benevolent Cemetery Number 2, to another area of property, took place in 1997. According to an article in The Tennessean, April 5, 1997, archaeologists believe that the burials took place between 1872 to the 1930's. The cemetery was deeded in 1872, to the Edgefield Benevolent Society Number 2. From this article, it states the work was being supervised by state archaelogist Nick Fielder. If you had any info about burials you were asked to call Dan Allen at 615-354-0586. Keep in mind that this was in 1997.
From research of Holman Milhous, he states "This is a 542 grave African-American cemetery that was started during the mid 1800's. People were buried here until the 1960's. In 1970 a prominent Nashville attorney bought the land and with the help of his brother (also an attorney) deeded the cemetery out of existence. They are planning to build warehouses on the site. Since most of the graves had wooden markers, which have rotted, it is impossible to know who most of the people were. Seven graves had stone markers which still exist. All of the remains were removed from their graves and placed in paper grocery bags then put in cardboard boxes then put in a trench and covered over."
More information on this cemetery and other black cemeteries in Nashville can be found in "The African-American History of Nashville, Tennessee, 1780-1930" By Bobby L. Lovett 1999. On p.108 gives history of Brick Church Pike Cemetery.
